Work From Home Ritual

In this blog, what I really want to talk about is working from home, what my rituals are as far as working remotely, and some tips that I can definitely share with you as far as how you can be productive and how you can stay focused working from home.

I have actually have had a working-from-home environment for about five years now. I do have an office as well that I do go to on a regular basis. Of course with COVID-19 and as far as social distancing, many of us right now, practically all of us are right now, are not in our office. We are working remotely, and this is a brand new thing for us. I mean, some of us, even though it’s been about a month, it’s still a tough adjustment to have working from home and as far as going to an office. So I wanted to share with you guys is just a couple tips as far as what I have done to make myself productive and make sure that I stay focused and obviously that I have a complete and full work day working remotely in this particular area. If you guys are excited about hearing this, please give me a thumbs up. I’d greatly appreciate it.

1. Create a routine. What do I mean by that? You need to have a certain time where you’re working, because you are actually on the job and you have to act like you’re in the office. So create your own routine as far as working is concerned. What do I mean by that? Number one, don’t do laundry and work at the same time. Don’t try to iron your clothes and work at the same time. Don’t try to watch your favorite television program at 11:00 and try to work from home. It does not work that way at all.

One of the great benefits, of course, is when you do pick your routine, you actually can have a lot of flexibility as far as when to work, and that’s a great thing. Some of us are night owls, some of us probably would prefer to maybe take the morning off, maybe work from 12 noon to 8:00 PM at night, or even later, from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Either way, whatever works for you and what’s going to make you more productive? For me personally, I’m actually more of a morning person. I actually usually I get up at five and get my run in, which is what I’ve been doing instead of heading to the gym, and then and by 6:30 or 7:00, I’m on my laptop and I’m actually working. I’ll stay usually probably between 7:00 and 5:00, 5:30, that’s pretty much what I’ll do. Then after 5:30 I’ll have my time where I can relax and just chill out with Carmen or something along those lines. You definitely have to have a structure and a routine put in place.

2. Another way to be productive is get a designated workplace to work. I am right now sitting at sort of like an office in our house. It’s one of the bedrooms that we don’t use. We don’t have a bed in here. I have a desk, I have my laptop, I have my monitor set up in here. Also, I have a little couch, a little loveseat couch that I could just sit down. Sometimes I’ll sit on it if I’m taking a conference call and I don’t need to get on the computer. I’ll do that once in a while, but other than that, I don’t use that too much, too often. I am right here. I am not in my bed and I’m not on the couch. Those are places that I do not work at.

This place, as far as this designated area, I rarely ever spend time here when I’m actually at home. Usually when I’m at home, obviously I’m sleeping, I’m doing laundry down in the laundry room, or the kitchen, eating, or I’m in the family room watching television or doing stuff like that or entertaining. This area right here, this is my solitude and where I work and where I get my things done. It’s sort of like reporting to the office as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, so definitely like I said, definitely have a designated area.

One other thing I will say, if you don’t have the capacity to have a room like this, kitchen is not too bad. I sometimes will work off my kitchen table. I’m able to distinguish between eating there and being able to put my laptop there and get some work done there and sometimes I like to do that. One of the things I would highly encourage, if you’re a little bit compulsive like me and look over and you see dishes in the sink and you and it’s driving you nuts that they’re there or in the drainer or whatever, clean that up, get that done. Get that complete and cleaned up before you start your work day, so that’ll keep you more productive at least, sitting in the kitchen. Like I said, do not sit on the couch and do not sit in your bedroom. Those are the two places I highly recommend that you definitely don’t sit and do that.

3. Dress, is to dress appropriately. As far as me, I’m comfortable in a T-shirt, in a pair of jeans. I’m okay, I can still be productive. For me, as long as I’m in this gear or something more, then I’m fine. I certainly do not wear my pajamas to do my work. I don’t roll out of bed, just come rolling down here and try to get work done. Some people actually have to go as far as putting on a suit in order to work effectively at home, and that’s okay. It gives you that mindset that I’m here, I’m productive, when I’m productive, I’m wearing this. That’s okay and that’s not a bad routine. For me, I’m okay. I can deal with T-shirt and jeans and work, but if you’re one of those people that can’t, then I’d certainly recommend that you dress up normally. Take a shower in the morning or in the evening before and get going. Get dressed up and start your day doing that way. Whatever suits your style and everything like that.

4. Take breaks. What do I mean by that? Usually, after 25 minutes or so, your focus starts to wane. Somebody can stay really completely at a peak level, peak productive level, and it’s usually sustainable for 25 minutes. What I’d recommend, after every 25 minutes, if you can, if you have the capacity to do this, is take a quick five-minute break. That just means stand up, stretching, taking some deep diaphragm breathing, or just doing some mini squats, or whatever can get your body moving. Definitely take that quick break, take that quick five-minute break to yourself and try to stretch out a little bit. Maybe grab something quick to eat or something like that.

Then of course, you have your lunch and you have your maybe extended breaks too. Those are not bad to take as well, especially if you cannot get away after 25 minutes if you have to take a call for an hour or if you have to work something and you need a complete hour or two to focus on one thing, definitely take a longer extended break of course. Like said, take your lunch. Definitely eat food that is obviously going to be nourishing and that’s going to give you the energy to get you through the day, just like you would in a normal work circumstances like that.

Definitely, like I said, I hope things are going well for all of you guys as far as professionally is concerned, that you still are remaining productive, and that obviously personally, even more important, that your health is great and your family and friends are doing well during this complete difficult time. I know things are really, really hard out there. Every time I turn on the news it’s just continued bad news. Of course, whether it’s going on with a COVID-19 and lockdowns in major cities like New York and Boston is continually to get hard now, so definitely, please, please, please, obviously practice social distancing and be smart about it, and please take care of your health and take care of your family.

Learning And Growing During COVID – 19 (Coronavirus)

In this blog, I want to talk to you guys about learning and growing during the COVID-19 Coronavirus period.

I’m here on a Wednesday morning here in the greater Boston area and it’s just been quite a journey so far, pretty much since mid-January when the Coronavirus did start to hit the United States. I know this is a global situation, global crisis that we’re all in, and I know initially obviously the Coronavirus, it started out east. I actually have my wife who’s actually from China, she definitely had a lot of concerns, a lot of worries that happened in there when the Coronavirus did initially hit in China in Wuhan. Obviously, pretty much the whole country, many major provinces had been on lockdown, and now they’re finally starting to recover.

And of course, here in the western part of the world we’re looking at situations where New York City has very seriously contemplated having a lockdown. I have a sister in New York City. Even in Boston right now there’s definitely a lot of processes in place. Non-essential businesses right now are not open. Many, many people are not in their offices right now. For me, it’s been business as usual, but the good luxury that I have is that I do not have to travel right now and so I definitely have a lot more time between my business. And as far as not having to travel out and everything is done at home, so my commute time has been cut drastically.

But first of all before I begin, I just want to send my heart and my prayers and also to you guys and your families and your friends, anybody who is close to you. I know this is a very, very serious time and a very, very serious crisis that we’re in. And of course, global markets has been affected, of course the US markets, the stock markets, the interest rates by the Fed. It’s just right now we’re looking right now at bear markets, we’re definitely turning into most likely a recession.

So we’re in situations where there’s obviously a lot of people who are losing their jobs right now, but also the other thing too, there’s great opportunity to be had as well. And basically to me, what I’ve been doing on a personal level is just definitely taking this time and really reflecting. For most of us, I think this time is actually is a timeout for us, is a timeout to breathe. It’s a timeout to stop and really take track of our journeys and our goals and our missions and what we want to accomplish and everything in life.

For me, I just definitely have taken this time to learn and develop myself, and that’s where the opportunity has been coming in, and the fact that I can take this period of time and learn new skills and grow from that. Because by learning these new skills, I acquire these new skills, I can teach these new skills to all of you. I can teach these new skills to friends and family, and to me that is extremely rewarding, but also it makes me more valuable as well. It makes me more valuable in the marketplace. It makes me more valuable to you guys as far as adding more value and for you guys to continue to grow and for all of you guys to meet your goals and everything like that.

I actually just got finished with a speed reading course from Jim Kwik called Kwik Reading, and it took me a little bit, I got through it okay. It was a great course and I’m very happy that I was able to go from beginning to end on the course, so I’m very excited about that. The greatest reward I got from it was my progress. I went from initially reading 180 words-per-minute, finishing up reading 391 words-per-minute, so that is pretty much more than a 100% increase in my reading speed. So there to me, that was incredibly rewarding.

But not only did I learn how to read faster, but also it’s a great comprehension course. It teaches you how to read certain types of books and certain types of text or whatever. Either it’s a fictional book, a nonfiction book, a book that contains a lot of digital and a lot of data with graphs and everything like that. It just was pretty much an outstanding course, and I’m very grateful that I definitely took the time to do the course, I invested the money to do the course. I got a good deal on the course, as well.

I’m very grateful for having the opportunity to take the time I needed to learn this skill of speed reading, because most of us as far as reading is concerned, we learned to read when we’re in kindergarten and first and second grade, and that’s where the learning stopped. Yeah, we continue to read and obviously able to comprehend, and it got us through high school, got us through universities, got certain degrees, but basically the skill of teaching reading really stopped when we were in elementary school. So that was a great thing that I was able to acquire, and I definitely highly recommend for all of you. And this is not an endorsement for Jim Kwik, although I highly recommend the course, but it just goes to show us the opportunities that we have in front of us now, now that we have a little bit more time on our hands, for most of us I should say. I know not all of us, but it is a great opportunity for all of us to grow.

Now what I plan on doing is I have a copyright course that I’m going to take, so I’m going to write copy. I’m really excited about that, as well. And obviously to have that skill will actually enable me to write my own copy much better, but maybe even assist others as far as writing copy is concerned, so I’m really excited about to learn this new skill. And obviously I can use it for Amazon, because I do have a couple of books out there, including The Big Four, so I’m really excited about that.

So I guess the question for me to you is if you’re in the same situation as I am, which most people are the majority, what are you doing as far as taking the time? What are the opportunities for you in order to grow and during this crisis period of time? Because remember, crisis is a word in China, it means danger and opportunity. Obviously we have great opportunities in front of us. Yeah, there is danger going on. People are getting sick, people are dying, and people are catching this virus very quickly and very rapidly, especially if we’re not being careful and especially if we’re not being prepared.

But also it does present us an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to learn a new language, an opportunity for us to learn how to play the guitar or learn how to play the drums or learn how to do a certain dance or whatever. Definitely a lot of artistic opportunities here, but also a lot of opportunities to learn a new skillset, as well. There’s some great online courses that are out there for any of us to take, or even go back and maybe finish our degrees now. Look into taking an MBA course online or something like that.

Jamie Sierra:
So to me it’s been a tough situation, because everything seems the last couple of weeks has been coming across as externally has been nothing but bad. You turn on the news, it’s been nothing but bad. A lot of press conferences with the President, with governors, with city mayors, and it just seems like there’s never good news that’s circulating around and you’re hearing about a lot of people catching the Coronavirus disease, and athletes, celebrities, even Prince Charles actually just got infected with COVID-19, so it is tough. There’s so much going on, there’s so much adversity in our society right now.

Another thing I would just highly recommend besides taking this opportunity to learn and grow is a couple things. Enhance your morning rituals. It’s a great time to … I know we can’t go to the gym and workout in the gym, but you can definitely go outside, do a walk. You can definitely start if you work on the treadmill or the elliptical, it’s a great time to go outside and just put on that extra gear and go for a run as well. So there’s definitely a lot of great opportunities for us in front of us and that’s what I’ve been trying to do for the most part, especially outside of working. Work is still taking a great deal of my time, so I’m fortunate for that, but also it is a great time to buckle up and learn and acquire new skills in whatever you want to accomplish, it’s right in front of you.

So I definitely wanted to share this with you. And yeah, as far as walking and running, I actually started running again this past week, and it’s been a struggle. It’s been hard, but I’m glad I’m doing it, and I’ve been doing it slowly. I haven’t been doing it every day, but I have done it consistent enough where I can put myself in a growing position and continue to progress and who knows where this will lead me. I mean maybe I will continue to exercise more outdoors, or maybe I’ll start going back to the gym when the gym reopens.

But I definitely wanted to share my perspective with you guys as far as the COVID-19. I wish all of you guys to be safe during this time. I wish all the best for you and your families, and from there, grow. Continue to grow, continue to learn, continue to take this time as an opportunity for yourself and for others, and make sure that you continue to add value to yourself and to others in this world and this society. So thank you again for watching and wish you guys all the best, and I look forward to talking to you guys in the next video.

Building Resilience!

IMG_7688

Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, and Michael Jordan are not the most gifted and talented at what they do.  Yet, they are the best in their field.  There is no question that they are so hungry.  Yet, they are like everyone else.  They lose games and matches.  They get in stages where nothing is going right.  Yet at the end of the day, they are champions.

What keeps them going when it is easy to give up?   They are all resilience, and they have more resilience than their opponents.  They are mentally tougher and play their best at the most critical moments.

Resilience is an essential skill we all need to acquire.  It is not just solely for the athletic field.  We need it for our business, relationships, health, and emotions as well.  We are going to have stress in our careers as well as our family life.  We need resilience to handle the most difficult circumstances.

Here are three steps we need to develop resilience:

  1. Be true to yourself.  Know who you are on the inside.  Know what you are good at and what you need to work on.
  2. See the negatives as positives.  A setback is a setup for a comeback.  Understand that life is ALWAYS happening for you, not to you.
  3. Do the preparation ahead of time mentally, physically, and spiritually.  We all need to develop a practice in all three areas.

The Number One Enemy Of Fulfillment!

IMG_6259

The quality of our life is the quality of our emotions.  I truly believe that the purpose of life is to be fulfilled which means to live with joy, love, passion, and play full out.  Unfortunately, there are also many emotions and actions that prevent us from being fulfilled.  It is very easy to fall in the trap such as anger, constant sadness, stress, and frustration.  These emotions will cause us to suffer, and suffering is the opposite of fulfillment.

Yet, I believe the biggest enemy of fulfillment is the easiest to catch.  The number enemy of fulfillment is complacency.  It is the number one enemy because complacency sneaks into our sub conscious mind and sticks to it.  Most of us are neither fulfilled nor depressed or at rock bottom that will motivate us to change.  Our lives are comfortable.  We sometimes feel the joy.  However, we don’t feel it consistent enough.  We also don’t feel the constant sadness and anger or at a deep level that will get as to take action.

So how do we avoid getting complacent, so we can live a rich and fulfilled life?  I believe there are four ways to avoid complacency.

Here are the four actions we need to do in order to avoid complacency:

  1. Constantly mix routines up.  This might sound a little simplistic.  However, breaking small routines will wake the conscious mind.  Change the way you commute to work.  Change up your routines like brushing your teeth.  Brush your teeth with the opposite hand.
  2. Tell your accountability buddy what is keeping your complacent and what actions and activities did you do to take you out of your comfort zone.  (daily or weekly)  I would recommend daily if you are stating out.
  3. Keep remind of yourself of the short time window.   Life is short and sometimes we are quick to forget it.
  4. Constantly remind yourself of what is your why.  It is not a how problem.  It is a why problem.   What is your why?  Always carry your “why” with you constantly.

What Made Jerry Rice One Of The Greatest Football Players Ever!

Jerry Rice #80

As many know, two of my passions and loves is sports and self-development.  As in my book, “The Big Four”, athletes and sports provide a great metaphor for life and success leaves clues.  For Jerry Rice, this was certainly the case.

Who is Jerry Rice?  He is an all-time NFL leader in receptions, touchdown receptions, and yards. His career record stand at 1549 receptions for 22, 895 yards with 197 touchdown receptions and 208 total receptions. His career points stands at 1295, which makes him the highest scoring non-kicker in NFL history. He is a three time Super Bowl Champion with the San Francisco 49ers, including one Super Bowl MVP.  Jerry was also ranked as greatest football player of all-time in 2010 by the NFL Network in their show, “NFL’s Top 100 Players of All Time”.  Jerry was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2010.  Year in and year out, he was the most feared opponent for other NFL defenses.

As a result, Jerry Rice was clearly the Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Wayne Gretzky, and Tiger Woods of the NFL.  He was simply the best.  He was able to perform at a high level for nearly 20 years in the NFL.

What made Jerry Rice the best?  Was it natural talent?  Outstanding speed?  No and no is the answer.  Jerry actually ran only a 4.71 40 yard dash.  For those like me who are not familiar, that is fast for a lineman.  However, a 4.71 40 is very slow for a skilled position player.  There have been many other players and athletes who have run a much faster time.  Also, Jerry was drafted in the middle of the first round in 1985.  He was not considered a top prospect to come out of college into the NFL.  Fortunately, for the 49ers, Head Coach Bill Walsh saw it differently.  Bill Walsh saw Jerry Rice perform one night on a highlight reel and was completed hooked on a wide receiver from a little known school called Mississippi Valley State University.

So what truly made Jerry Rice the best?  Jerry became the best because of his mindset, commitment to the game, and his willingness to work harder than anyone has ever in the sport.  There was no one more dedicated to his trade than Jerry Rice, period.  Jerry’s offseason regimen was even tougher and more demanding than anyone else.  Jerry made sacrifices that other players were not willing to make in order to become great at his trade.  One example was that a week after the 49ers won the Super Bowl, quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Steve Young came to the team’s facility to clean out his locker and get his belongings.  Steve hears something and peaks out in the back.  What Steve Young sees is Jerry Rice working out and doing routes on the practice field.  Instead of celebrating a Super Bowl, Jerry is already getting prepared to win the next Super Bowl.

Jerry continued throughout his career to compensate for his lack of natural speed.  Jerry was obsessed with mastering receiver routes on the practice and always seemed to find a way to get past an opponent and not be caught after catching the ball.  Rice was incredibly disciplined and prepared on the field.  His conditionally allowed him to be refresh late in the game and when the game was close.  It gave him a decisive edge over his opponent.

In addition, Jerry had this hill that was 2 ½ miles that he ran everyday on.  I believe to this day he runs this hill long after retirement.  This hill was a beast, and Jerry conquered.  Jerry would take fellow superstar teammates throughout the years on the hill with him.  There was no player that could keep up with Jerry Rice.  Once a player thought he was going full out, Jerry would accelerate the pace.

There is also a sense of humbleness and leadership by example Jerry constantly displayed.  It was routine during quarterback and receiver drills to run the play, make the throw, and the receiver to make the catch and play.  Once the play was complete, the receivers would go back and either walk to job back to the quarterback huddle.  Jerry, however; sprinted back to the huddle.  Jerry kept on doing this over and over again.

Another trait of Jerry’s was to show up to rookie camp and work and play with the rookies.  His message was that if he is there and doing everything to make the team, the rookies needed to do the same thing.  Jerry wanted to teach the rookies on what it takes to be a success in the NFL.

Lastly, Jerry was driven by fear and used fear as a friend.  He had a fear of being cut from the team and also feared if he made the team he would not start.  Jerry used fear on the field during a play, where he feared of being caught and tackled instead of scoring.  As a result, Jerry became the all-time leader in touchdowns scored.

We can definitely apply Jerry’s principles in every area in our life.  How can we become the Jerry Rice of our life?

  1. Be addicted to hard work.  There is no shortcut to putting in the work.  We have to work and practice in our trait and be totally dedicated.  It will lead to mastery.  Make the commitment.
  2. Find ways to compensate on your weakness that will enable to grow and get to the level you need to.  Jerry knew he was not the fastest person on the planet.  Thus, he need to find ways to compensate for his weaknesses.
  3. Lastly, we need to lead by example and remain.  No matter what we accomplish, we need to give back and never be above it.  Jerry was never above helping out rookies who were trying to make the pro level.  Jerry has never been shy on sharing his success story.  Jerry is completely transparent on how he was able to get to the level of being the greatest NFL player ever.

Dealing With And Overcoming Social Anxiety And Shyness!

IMG_7133 (1).JPG

I am going to be vulnerable here.  I truly struggle in social situations and have struggled with it through most of my life.  Having a case of shyness and social anxiety of some extent has been extremely difficult and at times prevented me from having the life I truly want.

I also know that I am not alone feeling awkward in social situations.  Some have it even worse than I do, where one could even be afraid to go to the store.  Yet by me sharing and completely being authentic, I know I can help others face their fear of being in social situations.

We know social anxiety and shyness occurs with us being among friends, at a party, approaching a guy or girl, or even a one to one interaction.  However, social anxiety also occurs in day to day life, in business, talking to a someone who you need assistance like a repairman, and of course at work with customers and colleagues.  It can be very uncomfortable and frightened for some.  More importantly shyness and social anxiety can crush peoples dreams.   It can kill a dream job and can kill having that dream relationship.  It also profoundly affects motional and spiritual life.

Fortunately, I have learned to deal with this dilemma  I have met this challenge head on by admitting that I can be shy and afraid to speak up.  I have also put myself in situations where I get uncomfortable and step up.  David Goggins states that we should never triple down on our strengths, but work on our weaknesses and make them strengths.  If we know that this process is going to suck and know we will be better for it, we do it.

Finding a cure all for social anxiety and shyness does not exist.  We need to work at it and practice it everyday.  There is no magic pill.  Yet, there are strategies we can implement and work on overcoming shyness and many other areas in life we want to enhance.

Here are some strategies that have worked for me.  I am not saying they are the solution.  However, it has worked for me.

  1. Get Uncomfortable.  I already mentioned this.  Yet, shy people love to get in this comfort zone and don’t want to leave it.  However, we need to get out there and be awkward, say something that you know you might feel humiliated, approach that girl or guy.  My friend was once a dating coach for men.  His first strategy for his clients was to go to a club, bar, or mall and get rejected at least 10 times before the night was over.  The next night he had his clients do it again.  Face your demons and fears head on.
  2. Make eye contact with others, stay in the moment, and listen to their story.  Showing that you care for another person and their story is very powerful.  I know for me, I live too much on what’s ahead and stay away from the moment not realizing that there is another human being.  Ask open ended questions to that person on what they’re passionate.
  3. Get in a beautiful state.  By changing your state, you change your emotions.  If you feel anxious change your state.  Our emotions have the ability to control everything in our lives.  We can change our state in many ways.  The easiest way is to changing your physiology.  Stand up or sit up state without slouch and smile will change your state radically.  Take the time to make sure that your mindset is positive and resourceful.  We can do this by getting up going to the gym, meditate, or listening to music.  Watch YouTube videos that will empower you to get in a state where you are socially confident.
  4. Have compassion for everyone.  Similar to the # 2, we have to be able to give back and show we care.  We never know what another person is going through.  Coming from a loving place.  If you come from a place of giving and caring for another person without focusing on yourself or your needs, shyness and anxiety will disappear.

Why We Are Not Happy!

There are three main reasons why we are not happy in our life.  They are:

  1. We have rules that make it extremely difficult and nearly impossible to be happy.
  2. We are not growing and improving ourselves.
  3. We are not giving and loving others on a consistent basis.

It is that simple.  The fact that we have these three rituals in our life is why we cannot have joy on a consistent basis.  We are always concerned about our happiness, but we still are not.

By having rules that make it challenging, we say to ourselves, “I will be happy if …………………” ,  or “When…………………happens, I will be happy”.  Why not just be happy now?  It is all in our rules.  How many times have we said, I will be happy when I graduate college?  Have we ever said, I will be happy when I have that great relationship, job, house, car, etc.?   All of us are guilty of it.   What happens?   We find ourselves not happy.  We look for something else to be happy.   Happiness comes within.  I know that you know that.  Yet, we are still not doing it.  If you not applying what you know, then you really don’t know it.

The other reason we are not happy is because we get comfortable and complacent in our lives, and there is nothing more dangerous than that.  By getting comfortable, we think we are happy.  However, nothing could be further from the truth.  Remember that time when you really struggled at something, but made incremental improvements?  How did that feel in the moment?  By stepping up and getting just 1% better each day will make a year from now extraordinary beyond belief.

Lastly, we all get caught up on focusing on ourselves.  I am very guilty of it.  Yet, we have to give back.  We need to give back to our family, friends, and loved ones.  We also need to give back to those we never met or never will meet.  It is crucial to feel that something to always want to give and add values to others.  This is where joy and abundance comes from.

How To Regain Lost Confidence!

IMG_6259

This question arrived in my email this morning and the question is, “how do I regain my self-confidence when it has been shaken?”

First of all, we all get our confidence shaken or tested at one time or another.  It is part of life and can happen at any moment whether it is you are not performing in your job as you thought you were.  It could be that you are madly in love and your partner wants to end the relationship.  It could also be a life event such as moving to another part of the country and having your certainty all of a sudden vanish.

Regardless of any event and outcome, life is always moving forward even when we are not ready to move with it.  That is okay at least for the moment.  However, we can be left standing still forever and need to eventually move forward as well.

Here are four quick steps in order to help you regain confidence after it has been shaken:

  1. Step away from the set back and do something enjoyable.  Your focus and energy will likely be stuck on the event and feeling on losing your confidence.  The best thing to do is to move away from the focus and do something fun and will recharge your batteries.  That could be playing golf, spending a day at the spa, or see certain family and friends.  These activities will remind us what we truly live for.
  2. Reflect by being honest with yourself and create an empowering meaning.  Tony Robbins states, “it’s not the event that matters, it is the meaning we give to the event’.  We party when we succeed and we ponder when we fail.  The truth is that life happens for us not to us.  Identify your role and responsibility on this setback occurring.  By getting real with yourself, you will find that the event or setback is actually a great thing because it prepares us for the next level we need to get into our lives.  A lost job means that we are getting ready for the job we always dreamed about happening or the perfect relationship.
  3. Take small actions to create momentum.  Once we have created an empowering meaning, we can get back to taken action.  We want to create small wins and build upon that.  According to Entrepreneur Magazine when we win at something — no matter how big or small — your body releases higher levels of dopamine that create the “addiction” for more success.  As the small wins accumulate, the larger the snowball grows and we progress slowly to larger goals.
  4. Whenever you get down, change your state.  It is natural for us to lose our confidence at any time.  The quickest way to get that confidence back is to change our state by moving our body, elevating our shoulders, and feel your feet are planted in the ground.  It is said that emotion is created by motion.  Confidence or a lack of confidence is nothing more than an emotion.

How I Deal With Being Lazy!

I admit it.  I can be very lazy.  I was the laziest person I know.  My brain was lazy.  My courage was weak, and physically I was not moving.  I believe that all of us at one time are lazy or have been lazy.

I have heard crazy things like lazy is a mental health issue or it is hereditary.  Yet, laziness is just a habit.   In order to not be lazy, we need to change the habit.  In order to change the habit, we need to condition ourselves to do so.  The best way to do this is change our state.  We need to move differently.  Thus, we need to change our physiology.  Changing your body can get you from a lethargic state to a high energy state in a heartbeat.

In addition to changing your state, here are other habits and methods I use to overcome laziness:

  1. Link massive pain to not taking action as opposed to taking action.  An example of this is when we decide not to eat healthy.  Think of the consequences of not eating healthy.  How will your body feel?
  2. Have consequences of not following through as well as a reward system.  For me, there is a tax for not achieving my weekly goals.  I pay $10 to my mastermind group when I don’t take action and achieve my outcome for the week.  If you are not in a mastermind group, you can make a bet with a friend that you will go to the gym for a certain number of days.  If not, you need to pay your friend $20.  Also a reward system can be motivating because what gets rewarded, gets repeated.  If I go to work out four times in a week, I will take Saturday and make it a fun day.  Otherwise, I will need to go to the gym on Saturday.
  3. Do you have compelling reasons?  Do you have a why or a purpose?  If so, you need to keep reminding yourself why you want to achieve a certain goal.  You need to check in constantly on why you are doing it.  Make sure that the why and purpose is meaningful and emotional that you will be moved deeply by it.  Do not make your why shallow because you will not be motivated long term by it.
  4. Lastly who is important in your life?  Who do you love?  We will never follow through on a goal or outcome if we are doing it for ourselves alone.  Why would one want to be healthy and fit?  It could be they want to be around for their children and grandchildren and see both generations have a family of their own.  Maybe you need to take that additional appointment on the weekend or need to make that additional call.  It could mean taking that dream vacation with your significant other or sending your children to the best private school.

Thus if we are being lazy, we are squarely focusing on ourselves.  Always remember if we are feeling unmotivated, change your state.  Also remind yourself of your why, have consequences and a reward system, and focus on who you love and care for.

Avoiding Negativity In Today’s Instant Media World

IMG_6114

In this blog, I wanted to talk about negativity.  There is negativity surrounding us everywhere, especially in the news and media.  It has only gotten worse in the instant media that we have today.  Better yet, it is the over consumption of watching news.

There is nothing more toxic and dangerous to the mind and soul by constantly feeding yourself with the news, especially negative news that is filled with tragedies, crime, politics, the economy, and climate change.  A study of researchers Shawn Achor and Michelle Gielan along with Thrive founder Arianna Huffington found that three minutes of negative news (vs. more uplifting content) can ruin your mood for the rest of the day.

The news is a business.  It is not to inform you.  It is to shock you.  Now I understand that conversations and discussions in our culture does require to stay informed, and I understand that.  However, if you have a growth mindset and listening to this, then you know that a prolonged discussion about politics or negative news is not the most compelling way to spend time.  I also know that we need to stay informed in order to network and have productive interactions in order to gain rapport.

Here are some ways that I have practiced to stay informed, but not overindulge listening, reading, and watching the news:

  1. Pick a time of day to catch up with the headlines.  Use a local news source, so you can at least know what is going on in your immediate world: weather, local news, sports, and local outlets do cover national and world news.
  2. If you feel the local news is not enough, choose a national headline that you are comfortable with.  Stay away from opinions and columnist because they can be extremely harsh and cruel to others who do not share their same beliefs.
  3. Avoid reviewing news in the morning.  The morning is time for yourself to prepare for a fulfilling and productive day.  Super life coach Dean Graziosi states that if he looks at his phone in the morning, he knows that it is a 50 percent chance that he will have a bad day.  Spend the morning in gratitude and do positive rituals.
  4. Spend no more than 30 minutes of watching and reviewing the news per day.  You can allow 45 minutes if you follow both local and national news.
  5. Most important, watch, read, or listen to something uplifting, inspirational, and gratifying content after you spend your time with the news.  This will elevate your state and make you productive and happier on you are doing next.
