Learning From Kobe And The Mamba Mentality!

“Success is the ability to use your passion to help someone else discover their passion.”  – Kobe Bean Bryant
“Obsessiveness is having the attention to detail for the action you are performing at the time you’re performing it.” Kobe Bryant
Kobe Bryant is (not was) a hero for many people around the world.  Kobe is an icon and one of the greatest basketball players of all time.   It is still shocking and devastating that he is no longer here with us as well as his daughter Gigi and seven other victims.
In his short time here though, Kobe left us a legacy.  He left us a legacy of greatness, love, joy, desire, and passion.  As I always say, greatness leaves clues, and we can learn from Kobe’s greatness and apply it to every area of our lives.  Kobe, himself, got involved in self development.  He began speaking about his philosophy of the mamba mentality.   The mamba mentality was not applied to just basketball.  It was applied to life for Kobe.  Kobe was in the process of his next chapter of greatness in his life.  He created a short film and won an Academy Award.  How many former athletes go on to make a picture alone, never mind winning an Academy Award.  Kobe also developed children’s books revolving around the mamba mentality.
The mamba mentality philosophy is simply “trying to be the best version of yourself”.  It is trying to become better everyday in all areas of our lives.   The mamba mentality consists of five pillars.  Instead of going into detail myself of the five pillars , I will attach a TedX video from Shanghai, China that Kobe did detailing the five pillars of the mamba mentality.
Here are the five pillars of the Mamba Mentality:
1. Be Passionate
2. Be Obsessive
3. Be Relentless
4. Be Resilient
5. Be Fearless

Reasons Come First!

I have learned from great mentors like Jim Rohn or Tony Robbins that the biggest difference in people is hunger.  Why one is getting what they want in life and another doesn’t get what they want is the former is hungry and the latter is not.  In addition, the latter doesn’t want it bad enough.

So why is the first person hungry or hungrier.  Does she/he have higher standards?  The answer is yes, but it goes beyond that.  The answer is that the hungry person has a bigger “Why”  and many more compelling reasons than the person not getting the desired results.

I heard a story from success life coach Ed Mylett talk about how his doctor diagnosed some heart issues with Ed.  Ed naturally was petrified of the diagnosis.  However, the doctor was caring enough and open enough to tell Ed that he needed to change his lifestyle and added leverage on Ed as well.  Ed has a daughter that he naturally loves dearly.  The doctor asked Ed, “do you want to be here to walk your daughter down the aisle on her wedding day?”.  Ed of course answered, “yes”.  The doctor told him that if Ed kept up with his lifestyle that some other man will be giving away his daughter on her wedding.  The doctor also told Ed, “if you do what I say and follow this, you will be around to give your daughter away”.  Ed has been following his doctors recommendation by having a great health and fitness routine.  Every time Ed does not feel like getting up to work out, he thinks of his daughter.  As a result, Ed gets up and works out everyday.  That is one of Ed’s many whys.

We as a result need to create that same leverage ourselves.  High standards come from compelling reasons.

Take the time and define your purpose and define why you want to accomplish your goals.  Write it down and keep it everywhere you go.

My 2019 Goals

Happy New Year background

2018 was a great year for me personally.  As with any other year, I had my highs and my lows.  There were some great experiences and goals that I did reach.  However, there were opportunities that I can improve in 2019.

2018 was the first year that I actually written down my goals and declared them publicly.  I am happy that I reached a few of them.  However, there was some valuable lessons.  One of the lessons that I learned is to build a foundation and bring it up slowly at first.  Last year, I set too many goals.  As a result, I got overwhelmed and frustrated.  I realized that when it comes to goal setting, we cannot go from 0 to 120 miles per hour in 2 seconds.

This year I am setting more short term goals and fewer of them.  Thus, I can focus on a couple of them while I gain momentum.  I can then take on more goals and missions once I build momentum.  For the first part of January, I will focus on my health and time management.  I am not even going to focus on my business, emotions, and other areas.  I feel that my health is a priority and being able to manage my time will enable me to be able to prioritize on the other areas of my life.

I will re-evaluate my goals at the end of January and make any readjustments.  Once the first quarter ends, I will make some goal changes for the remainder of the year because my yearly goals are not fixed.   They are flexible.  For example, I set a goal of making only 40 YouTube videos.  Yet, I know that I will likely make more than 40.  I want to make this goal achievable then stretch it out once I know I have the habit to be able to create more videos.  In other words, I am building a habit muscle to be more productive.

Here are my goals for 2019:

Health and Fitness Goals
To be 180 pounds by 2/15/19.  Currently at 195 pounds.
To work out a total 4 times/week in January including tennis.  Thus, I will go to the gym 2-3 times/week.  Deadline January 31st.
Time Goals
To plan my day the latest the night before.
Use the Apple Calendar on a daily basis, so I can structure business time, block out workout, blockout listening to education videos, read books, relationship time, etc.

I will visit a family member at two times/month

My 2018 Goals

My February 2018 Monthly Goals Report

I can’t believe that two months have passed in 2018.  I know there have been some great accomplishments.  There are also some areas that I need to accelerate the gas pedal on to get back on pace to reach my goals.

Here are some of my wins:

30 day gratitude challenge completed

Getting back to near on pace blogging on missionfulfillment.com

Getting close to par on my goal of posting 85 YouTube videos for 2018

The biggest accomplishment is donating half of my goal of $1,000 to charities and organizations

Some of my goals that are not on pace:

Reading Goals

Learning Goals

I must manage my time much more effectively in order to get these goals accomplished.  I definitely remain committed to reaching these goals and certainly do not want to cram these areas in December.  The purpose of having goals is to work on them throughout the year and not for one month or week.

I would love to hear your feedback on thoughts.  I would also love to hear on how each of you doing on accomplishing your goal.

My January 2018 Monthly Goals Report

In the first month of my monthly goals report, I had some wins and some developmental opportunities as well.

My wins have been the following:

Some of my goals are still dated in the future, like the YouTube subscribers as well as my vegan challenge.

Some of the areas that I need to drastic improve are my business and learning goals.   Here are the goals that I am falling short and not on pace:

Having 85 YouTube videos by December 31, 2018

Having 70 written blogs on www.missionfulfillment.com by December 31, 2018

To have 20 books read by December 31st.

I am okay if I don’t get to 20 books by the end of the year, as long as I make significant progress.   For the videos and blogs, I want to be able to serve you and add value to your life.  Thus, I am going to commit to make sure that I achieve the video and blog goals.  Not only that, but to produce great quality video and blogs.

I thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas as well and truly appreciate you staying on the journey with me.

My 2018 Goals
