Today, I had the opportunity to appear on local access television to talk about my book.  My friend Krystyne Cheever interviewed me on “The Big Four”.

It was a privilege to talk about a book, where I am able to talk about how we can all learn from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray.  One questions that Krystyne usually ask her quests is, “how would you inspire someone to follow path in creativity and passion for the arts?”.  I thought about my answer prior to the interview, and I truly believe there are two things that we need to follow our passion: love and belief.

  1. We need absolutely love what we do.  The love is going to keep us going, whether it is being an actor, writer, director, athlete, or any other field we are passionate about.  Too many times, I see people pursuing a certain field like acting for the glorification.  Pursuing for glorification is a huge mistake.  Even if you become a star, there will not be fulfillment unless we are loving the journey along the way.  Novak Djokovic struggled with his tennis back in 2010 and thought about quitting.  Now this is a 16 time grand slam champion.  Fortunately, he did not quit.  What kept him going was refocusing on the love of the game and letting the wins take care of themselves.  Winning trophies became secondary for Novak, while the love for tennis comes first.
  2. We also need to have that belief as well.  We will fail, get knocked down, but the belief in ourselves as well as the love of what we do will get us back up.  We must always act as if our prayers have been answered.  We need to act as if we already have made it big in our passion.  Roger Federer states we need to believe before we achieve.  Roger already had the belief of greatness before he started winning grand slams.  Roger also stated that most players feel that if they win a few matches, they will gather the belief.  Roger decided to believe he was already a champion before he became one.
